Product development experts Eminate and natural and healthy solutions provider Naturis have signed an agreement to bring a new salt reducing no potassium salt ingredient Soda-Lo 20 to the market to meet the 2012 salt reduction challenge.

Soda-Lo 20, a new low sodium no potassium ingredient developed by the food innovation company Eminate is now to be brought tomarket in partnership with Naturis.

Signed in September, the agreement follows successful work by the partners to support product trials with some of the industries’ biggest bread manufacturers. Managing Director of Naturis, Franz Smet says: “Reducing salt continues to be a key driver in the UK and and will remain that way till 2012 and beyond. For this reason ingredient solutions to reduce sodium will remain an important part of the Naturis offering for the foreseeable future. As guidelines on salt have become stricter, technology has needed to progress to meet them. Soda-Lo 20 represents this progress.”

With success in reducing sodium content in bread by more than 50% with no adverse affects on taste or processability and positive feedback in trials in a range of other food products the partners have confidence that they will be kept busy bringing a new and exciting product to the market.

“We realised that this was a big issue for public health and a significant market failure."

Soda-Lo 20 was developed following Eminate’s engagement with experts at Leatherhead Food International who highlighted the need for salt reduction for the industry to meet government guidelines on health in food. “We realised that this was a big issue for public health and a significant market failure when reviewing the existing salt replacement products and decided to invent to order” says Dr Stephen Minter, CTO at Eminate.

Application of an Eminate patented technology platform provided the solution, giving Eminate the opportunity to offer a new product, Soda-Lo 20.

Product trials by manufacturers indicate significant salt reduction is possible in a range of foods from breads, bagels, pizza bases through to non-meat frozen foods, with many more in consideration.

Seen by the partnership as a key opportunity for the food industry to achieve, and potentially over reach, the 2012 salt reduction guidelines (see the Food Standards Agency site http://www.food.gov. uk/healthiereating/salt) they are now ready to provide rapid and cost effective access to what we believe is one of the most exciting products to be brought to manufacturers in recent years. Eminate CEO Roger Carline sees Soda-Lo 20 as one of a range of products designed for the food industry to help us bring health benefits to the public and achieve the guidelines identified by UK and Europe.
